Lecture “Challenges and potentials in biomedical research”

On 28.-29.8.2018 Prof. Christian Eggeling visited our institute.
Christian Eggeling holds a PhD in Physics from the University of Göttingen, where he optimized single-molecule detection. From 2000 to 2003 he was a research scientist at Evotec, Hamburg, developing advanced fluorescence microscopy techniques for high-throughput drug screening. In 2003, Christian joined the MPI of Biophysical Chemistry, Göttingen as a senior scientist in the department of Professor Stefan Hell (2014 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry). Here, he focused on the field of optical super-resolution microscopy, specifically the biological applications of stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy.
Since 2012, Christian has been a principal investigator in the Human Immunology Unit and the scientific director of the Wolfson Imaging Centre at the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, Oxford University, where he became Professor of Molecular Immunology in 2014.
By the end of 2017, Christian had opened a new lab in the Institute of Applied Optics, Friedrich-University University Jena as well as holding a position as Professor of Super-resolution Microscopy at the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology Jena. Christian’s research is focused on advanced optical microscopy, especially for the investigation of cellular plasma membrane organization.
Prof. Christian Eggeling visited our laboratories, he met scientists working on a similar topic and he gave lecture “Challenges and potentials in biomedical research” that was visited more than 30 scientists. After the lecture, a fruitfull discussion with the scientists took place.
